This book makes a great reading and is a breath of fresh air in the field of pulmonary function testing. The style is simple with an easy-to-understand format. The book makes an engaging and interesting read unlike most of the books on pulmonary function tests. The nature of the respiratory mechanics and function is not always easy to understand, especially earlier in a career, but Jansen has made a great effort to clarify all of the topics related to pulmonary function tests. He has used colored diagrams, easy-to-read tables, and clear explanations. It is well laid out with each chapter briefly and helpfully summarized at its conclusion. Clear and colored illustrations are abundant with easy-to-read tables. There is reasonable referencing with a comprehensive index. The quality of printing and binding are excellent.

The reader develops a really good mental picture of respiratory physiology and anatomy while reading through the book. Both style of narration and illustrations in the book is coherent. For example, the concept of respiratory acinus, cardiopulmonary circulation, and acid base balance has been described in an excellent manner that helps develop a "spatial orientation" in reader's mind to help understand these concepts clearly. The author's 2-D and 3-D concepts around alveolar ventilation in light of the current research and concepts make an interesting read. Throughout the book colors, Figures and Tables are used wisely to keep the reader engaged. Explanations are simple and direct, and where background knowledge is required, it is given in a clear fashion without being patronizing.

The size of the book is great. It is divided into fifteen (15) chapters starting with history of respiratory physiology and structure and function in a user friendly manner. It then covers all the component of the pulmonary function testing including basic spirometry, airway responsiveness, lung volume, gas transfer factor, arterial blood gas analysis, airway resistance, lung and chest wall compliance, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. The author has used American Thoracic Sosiety (ATS)/ Euoropean Thoracic Society (ERS) practice guidelines as reference for pulmonary function testing and interpretation in his book. The book also covers appropriate protocols for patient preparation and care during the pulmonary function tests. There is separate chapter on quality control and normal laboratory variability. There is separate chapter on case histories of patients with questions and answers for self assessment. This helps in understanding different disease patterns and the pulmonary function test in them.

The author understands the globalized nature of the healthcare and for the first time, there are recommendation and reference equations for non-Caucasian population. This would greatly help in the interpretation of the lung function for the rest of the world's population and better understanding lung health and disease.

One unique feature is the use of vast experience of the author and challenging some of the traditional concepts in scientific manner around pulmonary function testing. The concept of aerosol bronchodilator reversibility testing, for example, the author has presented and analyzed the current evidence from several series and recommended new method of assessing the responsiveness of airways to aerosolized drugs. Another topic of great interest is the interpretation of spirometric values for cigarette smokers who have not developed the disease as yet, but still at a great risk. Sharing this information of early disease due to smoking and helping them quit is a great public health service. Education of healthcare provider in using simple statistics in the reporting process is another great concept. This would aid in better informing and confidence when reviewing and discussing the results with the patients.

Last but not the least, the book is reasonably priced. This book is a very accessible introduction to the interpretation of lung function tests. It might easily be used for reference and revision for both measurement practitioners and for the reporting clinician. Overall, this book can be recommended as an invaluable tool for those who work in pulmonary function laboratories and also for clinicians willing to take advantage of state-of-the-art lung function testing.
